What is contraception?

Contraception is also known as birth control, is the method, medications or devices used to prevent pregnancy. Contraception is available for all genders and is an important part of sexual health. Though some contracaption methods protect against sexually transmitted infections, not all do.

Types of Contraception

Apart from abstinence (not having sex), the safest way of protecting yourself from sexually transmitted diseases is to use a barrier method of contraception. Condoms are the most commonly used barrier method.

They are inexpensive, readily available, and the most convenient way minimising the risk of unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections. If used correctly, they are 98% effective.

Hormonal contraception options

Hormonal contraception does not protect against STIs, but is over 99% effective at preventing pregnancy if used correctly. Hormonal contraception options include the birth control pills, often simply referred to as ‘the pill’. The pill must be prescribed by a doctor and we can arrange your repeat prescriptions for you.

Contraceptive implants are now available on prescription. They are small rods that are inserted into the upper arm and are left in place for three to five years, depending on the type of implant.

The contraceptive coil may also be inserted in the vagina. They contain either a hormone or copper and are effective for up to five years.

Safe sex and contraception

If you or your partner is using a hormonal contraception, it is advisable to use barrier methods of contraception such as condoms, in order to protect against sexually transmitted infections which are spread by sexual contact from one infected person to their partner. Regular sexual health testing is an important part of sexual health, chat to your pharmacist about sexual heatlh, and testing for STIs.

If you have had unprotected sex, or fear that your contraception has failed, then the emergency contraceptive pill is available from our pharamcy or from your doctor or family planning clinics.

This will help prevent pregnancy, but offers no protection against potential sexually transmitted infections. It’s important to arrange a check up with a doctor, family planning clinic or hospital sexual health clinic as soon as possible.
